What is Finacea?

Finacea is a prescription medication in the form of a topical gel that contains azelaic acid—which is a naturally occurring acid. Azelaic acid allows the skin to refresh itself in response to the exfoliating effects of the acid. For this reason, it is principally used in acne treatment and the treatment of rosacea.

What Causes Acne and Rosacea?

Acne is a condition of the skin that is a result of hair follicles getting clogged up with oil and dead skin cells. Whiteheads, blackheads and pimples are all a manifestation of this issue. Acne can occur anywhere on the face, the back, shoulders or chest. While Acne is not a serious medical condition, due to the fact that it occurs most often with teenagers and some cases seem to be chronic, it can be a source of great emotional turmoil for the sufferer. Certain manifestations of acne such as nodules can be incredibly painful to the touch. Bad cases of acne can lead to scarring on the skin which can be difficult to get rid of through non-specialized means.

Rosacea is a skin disorder that causes redness throughout the various parts of the face. The redness can vary from mild to extreme in which even the blood vessels may become visible. In addition to that, the nose can sometimes appear bulbous and enlarged. This condition is called rhinophyma. The causes for rosacea are unknown, though it is speculated that a particular skin mite that is present in larger quantities in areas affected by rosacea may worsen the condition.

How Does Finacea Work?

Finacea comes in a concentration of 15 percent azelaic acid. The 20 percent concentration is Azelex. Both have been proven to be effective, thus dosage should be determined by your doctor. You should always strive to find the minimum effective dose.

Finacea is a topical gel that is applied directly on the affected site. Wash your hands before and after application of Finacea. Start by cleaning the chosen area with soap and then use a freshly cleaned towel to pat dry. Apply the medication as directed by your doctor and then go about your day. It is important to not cover any part of your face where this medication is applied as it could lead to more than the intended amount of absorption into your body.

Side Effects of Finacea

Typical side effects of azelaic acid are burning skin, tingling, stinging, or itchines. These are all a product of the fact that azelaic acid is an exfoliating agent, and so the abrasions to the skin can lead to discomfort in people with particularly sensitive skin. If you are allergic to propylene glycol, you should not use Finacea.
