What is Uceris?

Uceris (budesonide) is used to treat bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Uceris does not cure these conditions as they are currently incurable. Budesonide (Uceris) belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids which act as anti-inflammatories that function by decreasing the body’s natural immune response.

What is Crohns Disease/Ulcerative Colitis?

Crohn’s’ disease is an anti-inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in your digestive tract. This inflammation in the digestive tract leads to abdominal pain, excessive diarrhea, and fatigue as well as weight loss caused by malnutrition. The inflammation inherent to Crohn’s disease can be localized or affecting much of the digestive tract. It affects different areas for different people and so two people can have very different symptoms and levels of severity to those symptoms. This inflammation can spread deeply into the tissues of the bowels and can even potentially lead to life-threatening conditions.

Doctors have yet to understand what causes Crohn’s disease. Like many issues in the gut, diet and stress were thought to be a cause for Crohn’s and while these factors may aggravate the condition they alone are not responsible for it. It’s possible for other viruses or bacteria to trigger Crohn’s when an abnormal immune response is triggered. While heredity is not a surefire method of determining if you or someone else will have Crohn’s, it certainly is possible. Interestingly, many people with Crohn’s do not have a history of the disease in their family.

Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis have similar symptoms but are different. While both conditions can make life difficult, ulcerative colitis can be severe enough to require surgery. It is also important to remember that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is not the same thing as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IDB affects men and women equally and approximately 700,000 thousand people in the US are affected by the disease per year.

How is Uceris Taken?

Uceris is taken orally with or without food typically once daily in the morning. This medication is not intended to be chewed or crushed, you must swallow it whole as crushing or chewing the medication will release the effects of the drug instantly which can greatly increase the chances of side effects.

Uceris Side Effects

The side effects of Uceris are fewer than many other corticosteroids due to the nature of the medication. Budesonide works locally in the gut and due to that, minimal amounts of the medicine are absorbed into the body. Typically, nausea, heartburn, and headache are potential side effects. It is important to remember that since this medication is artificially lowering your immune response, it will decrease the body’s ability to fight off infections should they occur.
